Today, Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. Jesus’ words inspire us to talk about having faith that drives out fear. To this end, I would like to remind you about some young people in the Bible. Prepare to tell me who they are when I finish describing them.  

In Judges 6, God’s angel appeared to a youth and said ¹² to him, “The LORD is with you, O valiant warrior.” ¹³ The young man answered, “O my lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Moreover, where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?’ However, now the LORD has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.” ¹⁴ And the LORD looked at him and said, “Go in this your strength and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?” the young man, 15, said to the angel, “O Lord, how shall I deliver Israel? Behold, my family is the least in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my Father’s house.” ¹⁶ But the LORD said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat Midian as one man.” Who was the young man (Gideon)? When God called Gideon, he was threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites, who were oppressing Israel at the time (Jdg 6:11ff). Gideon was surprised when the angel called him a valiant warrior because he knew he was an ordinary farmer. However, through Gideon, God humbled the Midianites (Jdg 7:1ff). Gideon’s faith is an example of the type of faith that drives fear away. This is the type of faith God wants us to ask for in today’s mass. There was another youth, this time, a young woman whose faith drove away fear. At that time, no one was allowed to go and see the king unless the king summoned them. Death was the penalty for anyone who dared to walk into the king’s palace uninvited. Not even the queen was above that rule. However, there was a plan to destroy all Jews soon. For this reason, the queen could no longer wait for the king to summon her. She summoned courage and requested – 16 “Go, assemble all the Jews who are found in Susa, and fast for me; do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. My maidens and I also will fast in the same way. Moreover, thus I will go in to the king, which is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish.” Who was this young woman (Queen Esther)? Just like Queen Esther, the mother of God, also delivers us from destruction by saying YES to God despite the risks. Recall that Mary, the mother of God, faced an uncertain and potentially dangerous future when told she would give birth to the Messiah (Luke 1). The fear of social disgrace, misunderstanding, and even death loomed large for an unwed mother in her culture. However, Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant…May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38).

In Hebrews 11, we read that faith is the realisation of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen. Because of it, the ancients were well attested. Our second reading gives us the example of people like Abraham, Sarah, and Isaac. All these people faced uncertainty, fear, and discouragement, yet they had faith in God.

Beloved, we, too, need to pray for a strong faith that sees beyond the physical and ordinary. Faith is spiritual eyesight, and we all need to pray for it. We are in a spiritual battle against the enemy and its agents. The family is the foundation of society. However, family life is under severe attack today. For example, the rate of infidelity and divorce among couples is making so many afraid of the sacrament of matrimony. There are many reasons people do not want to marry, but one of them is fear. Unfortunately, it has almost become normal to cohabit these days. Our children are watching and learning. Let us pray for strong faith that destroys every fear of commitment. God answers prayers.

Hoy, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: «No temáis más, pequeño rebaño, porque a vuestro Padre le complace daros el reino». Las palabras de Jesús nos inspiran a hablar sobre la fe que expulsa el miedo. Con este fin, me gustaría recordarles a algunos jóvenes de la Biblia. Prepárense para decirme quiénes son cuando termine de describirlos.

En Jueces 6, el ángel de Dios se le apareció a un joven y le dijo: «El Señor está contigo, valiente guerrero». El joven respondió: «Señor mío, si el Señor está con nosotros, ¿por qué nos ha sucedido todo esto? Además, ¿dónde están todos los milagros de los que nos hablaron nuestros padres, diciendo: «¿No nos sacó el Señor de Egipto?» Sin embargo, ahora el Señor nos ha abandonado y nos ha entregado en manos de Madián». 14 Y el Señor lo miró y le dijo: «Ve con esta tu fuerza y libra a Israel de la mano de Madián. ¿No te he enviado yo? El joven, 15, dijo al ángel: «Oh Señor, ¿cómo libraré a Israel? He aquí que mi familia es la más pequeña de Manasés, y yo soy el más joven en la casa de mi padre». 16 Pero el Señor le dijo: «Ciertamente estaré contigo, y derrotarás a Madián como a un solo hombre». ¿Quién era el joven (Gedeón)?

Cuando Dios llamó a Gedeón, este estaba trillando trigo en un lagar para ocultarlo de los madianitas, que en aquel momento oprimían a Israel (Jue 6, 11 ss.). Gedeón se sorprendió cuando el ángel lo llamó valiente guerrero, porque sabía que era un simple granjero. Sin embargo, a través de Gedeón, Dios humilló a los madianitas (Jue 7, 1 ss.). La fe de Gedeón es un ejemplo del tipo de fe que aleja el miedo. Este es el tipo de fe que Dios quiere que pidamos en la misa de hoy. Hubo otra joven, esta vez una mujer, cuya fe alejó el miedo. En aquella época, nadie podía ir a ver al rey a menos que este lo convocara. La pena para cualquiera que se atreviera a entrar en el palacio del rey sin haber sido invitado era la muerte. Ni siquiera la reina estaba por encima de esa norma.

Sin embargo, existía un plan para exterminar a todos los judíos en breve. Por esta razón, la reina no podía esperar más a que el rey la convocara. Reuniendo todo su valor, solicitó: «Vayan, reúnan a todos los judíos que se encuentran en Susa y ayunen por mí; no coman ni bebán durante tres días, ni de noche ni de día. Mis doncellas y yo también ayunaremos de la misma manera. Además, así iré al rey, lo cual no es conforme a la ley; y si perezco, perezco». ¿Quién era esta joven (la reina Ester)? Al igual que la reina Ester, la madre de Dios también nos libra de la destrucción al decir SÍ a Dios a pesar de los riesgos. Recordemos que María, la madre de Dios, se enfrentó a un futuro incierto y potencialmente peligroso cuando le dijeron que daría a luz al Mesías (Lucas 1). El miedo a la deshonra social, a la incomprensión e incluso a la muerte se asomaba sobre una madre soltera en su cultura. Sin embargo, María respondió: «Yo soy la sierva del Señor… Hágase en mí según tu palabra» (Lucas 1:38).

En Hebreos 11 leemos que la fe es la realización de lo que se espera y la evidencia de lo que no se ve. Gracias a ella, los antiguos fueron bien atestiguados. Nuestra segunda lectura nos da el ejemplo de personas como Abraham, Sara e Isaac. Todas estas personas se enfrentaron a la incertidumbre, el miedo y el desánimo, pero tuvieron fe en Dios. Queridos hermanos, nosotros también necesitamos orar por una fe fuerte que vea más allá de lo físico y lo ordinario. La fe es la vista espiritual, y todos necesitamos orar por ella. Estamos en una batalla espiritual contra el enemigo y sus agentes. La familia es la base de la sociedad. Sin embargo, la vida familiar está siendo objeto de graves ataques en la actualidad. Por ejemplo, la tasa de infidelidad y divorcio entre las parejas, está haciendo que muchos teman al sacramento del matrimonio. Hay muchas razones por las que la gente no quiere casarse, pero una de ellas es el miedo. Desgraciadamente, hoy en día el vivir juntos sin estar casados, se ha convertido casi en algo normal. Nuestros hijos nos observan y aprenden. Oremos por una fe fuerte que destruya todo miedo al compromiso. Dios responde a las oraciones.
