20th Sunday in Ordinary TIme

Sometimes, Jesus makes some statements, and one cannot help but wonder what he means. For example, how can Jesus, the Prince of Peace say, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing?! Is Jesus for peace or conflict? However, to help us understand what Jesus meant, let me give you the example of a few saints. St. Thomas Aquinas faced intense and prolonged opposition from his family when he decided to join the Dominican Order at age 19. His parents and brothers forcibly kidnapped him and held him prisoner for almost one or two years in the family castles to prevent him from joining the Dominicans and to pressure him to renounce his religious aspirations. When persuasion failed, his brothers tried to break his resolve by sending a prostitute to his room, hoping that yielding to sexual temptation would prevent him from seeking a life of chastity as a Dominican. Thomas, however, drove her out and prayed for strength.

St. Catherine of Siena faced significant opposition from her parents, too. Her parents insisted she marry, even suggesting she wed her deceased sister’s widower. Catherine firmly opposed these plans, which deeply displeased her parents. To break her resolve, her parents deprived her of her bedroom, preventing her from having private time for prayer. They reassigned her to the kitchen to perform menial housework, hoping that the demands of servitude would make her abandon her spiritual aspirations. Her mother, in particular, urged Catherine to improve her appearance to attract a husband. In response, Catherine cut off her long hair as a protest, further angering her mother. Despite these tactics, Catherine remained steadfast. She adapted psychologically and spiritually—serving her family as if they were the Holy Family and apostles, creating an “inner cell” of prayer and devotion even in the midst of her imposed chores. Her father’s heart softened after witnessing her piety and resilience; he eventually accepted her vocation as God’s will. Her mother remained resistant, although she no longer actively opposed Catherine’s choices. The experiences of Sts Thomas and Catherine can help us understand what Jesus meant when He said “a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three.”

In case you are thinking persecution is a thing of the past, may I remind you about key facts and figures on religious persecution in Nigeria? Nigeria is considered the world’s centre of Christian martyrdom, with more Christians killed for their faith here than in the rest of the world combined. In the first seven months of 2025, more than 7,000 Christians were killed in Nigeria. That is an average of 30 per day. Since 2009, over 125,000 Christians have been killed for their faith. At least 7,800 Christians have been abducted so far in 2025, averaging 35 per day. More than 12,000 Christians were kidnapped for their faith between 2015 and 2023. More than 1,100 Christian communities have been attacked and sacked by militants, primarily in the northern and Middle Belt regions. About 600 Christian clerics have been abducted since 2009, including at least 250 Catholic priests and 350 pastors. The aim of these data is not to scare you but to get you to do something practical. What will we do from now on? Can we complain less and be more grateful for the privilege to be alive? Also, the relative peace we enjoy here is a luxury that many people cannot afford. Can we pray more frequently for those undergoing persecution?

A veces, Jesús hace algunas declaraciones y uno no puede evitar preguntarse qué quiere decir. Por ejemplo, ¿cómo puede el Príncipe de la Paz decir: «He venido a traer fuego a la tierra, ¡y cómo desearía que ya estuviera ardiendo!». ¿Jesús está a favor de la paz o del conflicto? Para ayudarnos a comprender lo que Jesús quiso decir, permítanme darles el ejemplo de algunos santos.

Santo Tomás de Aquino se enfrentó a una intensa y prolongada oposición por parte de su familia cuando decidió unirse a la Orden Dominicana a los 19 años. Sus padres y hermanos lo secuestraron por la fuerza y lo mantuvieron prisionero durante casi uno o dos años en los castillos familiares para impedirle unirse a los dominicos y presionarlo para que renunciara a sus aspiraciones religiosas. Cuando la persuasión fracasó, sus hermanos intentaron quebrantar su determinación enviando a una prostituta a su habitación, con la esperanza de que ceder a la tentación sexual le impidiera buscar una vida de castidad como dominico. Sin embargo, Tomás la hechó afuera y rezó para pedir fuerzas. Este episodio se recuerda en la tradición como el momento en que recibió de Dios el don místico de la castidad.

Santa Catalina de Siena también se enfrentó a una fuerte oposición por parte de sus padres. Estos insistían en que se casara, llegando incluso a sugerirle que se casara con el viudo de su hermana fallecida. Catalina se opuso firmemente a estos planes, lo que disgustó profundamente a sus padres. Para quebrantar su determinación, sus padres la privaron de su dormitorio, impidiéndole tener tiempo privado para rezar. Le asignaron especificamente a la cocina para que realizara tareas domésticas, con la esperanza de que las exigencias del servicio la hicieran abandonar sus aspiraciones espirituales. Su madre, en particular, presionaba a Catalina a mejorar su apariencia para atraer a un marido. En respuesta, Catalina se cortó el pelo largo en señal de protesta, lo que enfureció aún más a su madre. A pesar de estas tácticas, Catalina se mantuvo firme. Se adaptó psicológica y espiritualmente, sirviendo a su familia como si fueran la Sagrada Familia y los apóstoles, creando una «lugar especial interior» de oración y devoción incluso en medio de las tareas que le imponían. El corazón de su padre se ablandó tras ser testigo de su piedad y resistencia; finalmente aceptó su vocación como voluntad de Dios. Su madre siguió resistiéndose, aunque ya no se oponía activamente a las decisiones de Catalina. Las experiencias de los santos Tomás y Catalina pueden ayudarnos a comprender lo que Jesús quiso decir cuando afirmó: «Una familia de cinco se dividirá, tres contra dos y dos contra tres».

En caso de que pienses que la persecución es cosa del pasado, ¿puedo recordarte algunos datos y cifras clave sobre la persecución religiosa en Nigeria? Nigeria está considerada el centro mundial del martirio cristiano, ya que aquí mueren más cristianos por su fe que en el resto del mundo juntos. En los primeros siete meses de 2025, más de 7000 cristianos fueron asesinados en Nigeria. Eso supone una media de 30 al día. Desde 2009, más de 125 000 cristianos han sido asesinados por su fe. Al menos 7800 cristianos han sido secuestrados en lo que va de 2025, lo que supone una media de 35 al día. Más de 12 000 cristianos fueron secuestrados por su fe entre 2015 y 2023. El objetivo de estos datos no es asustarte, sino animarte a hacer algo práctico. ¿Qué vas a hacer a partir de ahora? ¿Puedes quejarte menos y estar más agradecido? La relativa paz de la que disfrutas aquí es un lujo que mucha gente no puede permitirse. ¿Puedes rezar más a menudo por aquellos que sufren persecución?

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

How many of us know Michael Jordan: Six-time NBA champion and five-time MVP, Serena Williams: Holder of 23 Grand Slam singles titles, and regarded as one of the greatest athletes. Does anyone remember Pelé: Three-time World Cup winner, scored over 1,000 career goals? How about Muhammad Ali: Three-time world heavyweight champion. If they committed no crime and had no incapacity, can anyone stop any of the mothers of these great athletes from getting a front seat at their games? If the mothers of great athletes can get access, can anyone or anything stop the mother of life itself from enjoying eternal life?

The Church teaches that Mary’s Assumption both honours her unique role as the Mother of Jesus and affirms her freedom from original sin (the Immaculate Conception). The Assumption of Mary is a central Marian doctrine and was defined as dogma by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950. Nowhere in the Bible do we find the Assumption of Mary explicitly mentioned; however, based on Sacred Tradition and theological reflection, we understand how Mary could not undergo bodily decay because Luke 1:28 tells us she was “full of grace”, and we know she was preserved from original sin. The Church teaches that: Mary, the Mother of God, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory at the end of her earthly life. We see the Assumption as a singular participation in Christ’s Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of all Christians. By taking His mother into heaven, Jesus wants us to prepare for the glory that awaits us.

On this solemnity, let us recultivate the habit of praying our rosaries daily. Please do not let a day pass without you asking for Mary’s intercession. This is an important prayer that helps us in our fight against sin and evil.

¿Cuántos de nosotros conocemos a Michael Jordan: seis veces campeón de la NBA y cinco veces MVP (Mas Valioso Jugador), Serena Williams: ganadora de 23 títulos de (Tenis) Grand Slam en individuales y considerada una de las mejores atletas de la historia? ¿Alguien recuerda a Pelé: tres veces ganador de la Copa del Mundo, con más de 1000 goles en su carrera? ¿Y Muhammad Ali, tres veces campeón mundial de peso pesado? Si no cometieron ningún delito y no tenían ninguna incapacidad, ¿puede alguien impedir que las madres de estos grandes atletas ocuparan un asiento en primera fila en sus partidos? Si las madres de los grandes atletas pueden tener acceso, ¿puede alguien o algo impedir que la madre de la vida misma disfrute de la vida eterna?

La Iglesia enseña que la Asunción de María honra su papel único como Madre de Jesús y afirma su libertad del pecado original (la Inmaculada Concepción). La Asunción de María es una doctrina mariana fundamental y fue definida como dogma por el papa Pío XII el 1 de noviembre de 1950. En ninguna parte de la Biblia se menciona explícitamente la Asunción de María; sin embargo, basándonos en la Sagrada Tradición y en la reflexión teológica, entendemos que María no pudo sufrir la descomposición corporal porque Lucas 1:28 nos dice que estaba «llena de gracia», y sabemos que fue preservada del pecado original. La Iglesia enseña que: María, la Madre de Dios, fue asumida en cuerpo y alma a la gloria celestial al final de su vida terrenal. Consideramos la Asunción como una participación singular en la resurrección de Cristo y una anticipación de la resurrección de todos los cristianos. Al llevar a su madre al cielo, Jesús quiere que nos preparemos para la gloria que nos espera.

En esta solemnidad, recultivemos el hábito de rezar el rosario todos los días. Por favor, no dejen pasar un solo día sin pedir la intercesión de María. Esta es una oración importante que nos ayuda en nuestra lucha contra el pecado y el mal.

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today, Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. Jesus’ words inspire us to talk about having faith that drives out fear. To this end, I would like to remind you about some young people in the Bible. Prepare to tell me who they are when I finish describing them.  

In Judges 6, God’s angel appeared to a youth and said 12 to him, “The LORD is with you, O valiant warrior.” 13 The young man answered, “O my lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Moreover, where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?’ However, now the LORD has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.” 14 And the LORD looked at him and said, “Go in this your strength and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?” the young man, 15, said to the angel, “O Lord, how shall I deliver Israel? Behold, my family is the least in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my Father’s house.” 16 But the LORD said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat Midian as one man.” Who was the young man (Gideon)? When God called Gideon, he was threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites, who were oppressing Israel at the time (Jdg 6:11ff). Gideon was surprised when the angel called him a valiant warrior because he knew he was an ordinary farmer. However, through Gideon, God humbled the Midianites (Jdg 7:1ff). Gideon’s faith is an example of the type of faith that drives fear away. This is the type of faith God wants us to ask for in today’s mass. There was another youth, this time, a young woman whose faith drove away fear. At that time, no one was allowed to go and see the king unless the king summoned them. Death was the penalty for anyone who dared to walk into the king’s palace uninvited. Not even the queen was above that rule. However, there was a plan to destroy all Jews soon. For this reason, the queen could no longer wait for the king to summon her. She summoned courage and requested – 16 “Go, assemble all the Jews who are found in Susa, and fast for me; do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. My maidens and I also will fast in the same way. Moreover, thus I will go in to the king, which is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish.” Who was this young woman (Queen Esther)? Just like Queen Esther, the mother of God, also delivers us from destruction by saying YES to God despite the risks. Recall that Mary, the mother of God, faced an uncertain and potentially dangerous future when told she would give birth to the Messiah (Luke 1). The fear of social disgrace, misunderstanding, and even death loomed large for an unwed mother in her culture. However, Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant…May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38).

In Hebrews 11, we read that faith is the realisation of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen. Because of it, the ancients were well attested. Our second reading gives us the example of people like Abraham, Sarah, and Isaac. All these people faced uncertainty, fear, and discouragement, yet they had faith in God.

Beloved, we, too, need to pray for a strong faith that sees beyond the physical and ordinary. Faith is spiritual eyesight, and we all need to pray for it. We are in a spiritual battle against the enemy and its agents. The family is the foundation of society. However, family life is under severe attack today. For example, the rate of infidelity and divorce among couples is making so many afraid of the sacrament of matrimony. There are many reasons people do not want to marry, but one of them is fear. Unfortunately, it has almost become normal to cohabit these days. Our children are watching and learning. Let us pray for strong faith that destroys every fear of commitment. God answers prayers.

Hoy, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: «No temáis más, pequeño rebaño, porque a vuestro Padre le complace daros el reino». Las palabras de Jesús nos inspiran a hablar sobre la fe que expulsa el miedo. Con este fin, me gustaría recordarles a algunos jóvenes de la Biblia. Prepárense para decirme quiénes son cuando termine de describirlos.

En Jueces 6, el ángel de Dios se le apareció a un joven y le dijo: «El Señor está contigo, valiente guerrero». El joven respondió: «Señor mío, si el Señor está con nosotros, ¿por qué nos ha sucedido todo esto? Además, ¿dónde están todos los milagros de los que nos hablaron nuestros padres, diciendo: «¿No nos sacó el Señor de Egipto?» Sin embargo, ahora el Señor nos ha abandonado y nos ha entregado en manos de Madián». 14 Y el Señor lo miró y le dijo: «Ve con esta tu fuerza y libra a Israel de la mano de Madián. ¿No te he enviado yo? El joven, 15, dijo al ángel: «Oh Señor, ¿cómo libraré a Israel? He aquí que mi familia es la más pequeña de Manasés, y yo soy el más joven en la casa de mi padre». 16 Pero el Señor le dijo: «Ciertamente estaré contigo, y derrotarás a Madián como a un solo hombre». ¿Quién era el joven (Gedeón)?

Cuando Dios llamó a Gedeón, este estaba trillando trigo en un lagar para ocultarlo de los madianitas, que en aquel momento oprimían a Israel (Jue 6, 11 ss.). Gedeón se sorprendió cuando el ángel lo llamó valiente guerrero, porque sabía que era un simple granjero. Sin embargo, a través de Gedeón, Dios humilló a los madianitas (Jue 7, 1 ss.). La fe de Gedeón es un ejemplo del tipo de fe que aleja el miedo. Este es el tipo de fe que Dios quiere que pidamos en la misa de hoy. Hubo otra joven, esta vez una mujer, cuya fe alejó el miedo. En aquella época, nadie podía ir a ver al rey a menos que este lo convocara. La pena para cualquiera que se atreviera a entrar en el palacio del rey sin haber sido invitado era la muerte. Ni siquiera la reina estaba por encima de esa norma.

Sin embargo, existía un plan para exterminar a todos los judíos en breve. Por esta razón, la reina no podía esperar más a que el rey la convocara. Reuniendo todo su valor, solicitó: «Vayan, reúnan a todos los judíos que se encuentran en Susa y ayunen por mí; no coman ni bebán durante tres días, ni de noche ni de día. Mis doncellas y yo también ayunaremos de la misma manera. Además, así iré al rey, lo cual no es conforme a la ley; y si perezco, perezco». ¿Quién era esta joven (la reina Ester)? Al igual que la reina Ester, la madre de Dios también nos libra de la destrucción al decir SÍ a Dios a pesar de los riesgos. Recordemos que María, la madre de Dios, se enfrentó a un futuro incierto y potencialmente peligroso cuando le dijeron que daría a luz al Mesías (Lucas 1). El miedo a la deshonra social, a la incomprensión e incluso a la muerte se asomaba sobre una madre soltera en su cultura. Sin embargo, María respondió: «Yo soy la sierva del Señor… Hágase en mí según tu palabra» (Lucas 1:38).

En Hebreos 11 leemos que la fe es la realización de lo que se espera y la evidencia de lo que no se ve. Gracias a ella, los antiguos fueron bien atestiguados. Nuestra segunda lectura nos da el ejemplo de personas como Abraham, Sara e Isaac. Todas estas personas se enfrentaron a la incertidumbre, el miedo y el desánimo, pero tuvieron fe en Dios. Queridos hermanos, nosotros también necesitamos orar por una fe fuerte que vea más allá de lo físico y lo ordinario. La fe es la vista espiritual, y todos necesitamos orar por ella. Estamos en una batalla espiritual contra el enemigo y sus agentes. La familia es la base de la sociedad. Sin embargo, la vida familiar está siendo objeto de graves ataques en la actualidad. Por ejemplo, la tasa de infidelidad y divorcio entre las parejas, está haciendo que muchos teman al sacramento del matrimonio. Hay muchas razones por las que la gente no quiere casarse, pero una de ellas es el miedo. Desgraciadamente, hoy en día el vivir juntos sin estar casados, se ha convertido casi en algo normal. Nuestros hijos nos observan y aprenden. Oremos por una fe fuerte que destruya todo miedo al compromiso. Dios responde a las oraciones.

Oh Luis Santo, adornado de angélicas costumbres: yo, indignísimo devoto vuestro, os encomiendo principalmente la castidad de mi alma y cuerpo, y os pido que, por vuestra pureza angélica, os dignéis encomendarme al Cordero inmaculado, Cristo Jesús, y a su purísima Madre, Virgen de vírgenes, guardándome de todo pecado. No permitáis que yo manche mi alma con la menor impureza; antes bien, cuando me viereis en la tentación o peligro de pecar, alejad de mi corazón todos los pensamientos y afectos inmundos, y despertad en mi la memoria de la eternidad y de Jesús crucificado. Imprimid altamente en mi corazón un profundo sentimiento de temor santo de Dios, y abrasadme en su divino amor, para que así, siendo imitador vuestro en la tierra, merezca gozar de Dios en vuestra compañía.

Enseñando la Fe

Oración al espíritu Santo

Ven Espíritu Santo, envía tu luz desde el cielo. Padre amoroso del pobre; don, en tus dones espléndido; luz que penetra las almas; fuente del mayor consuelo. 

Ven, dulce huésped del alma, descanso de nuestro esfuerzo, tregua en el duro trabajo, brisa en las horas de fuego, gozo que enjuga las lágrimas y reconforta en los duelos.

Entra hasta el fondo del alma, divina luz y enriquécenos. Mira el vacío del hombre si Tú le faltas por dentro; mira el poder del pecado cuando no envías tu aliento.

Riega la tierra en sequía, sana el corazón enfermo, lava las manchas, infunde calor de vida en el hielo, doma el espíritu indómito, guía al que tuerce el sendero.

Reparte tus Siete Dones según la fe de tus siervos. Por tu bondad y tu gracia dale al esfuerzo su mérito; salva al que busca salvarse y danos tu gozo eterno.

Mensaje Pastoral

La paz de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo este con ustedes, en este domingo en que celebramos la fiesta de Pentecostés, es una excelente oportunidad para consagrarnos al Espíritu Santo. Los invito para que consagren su vida, su trabajo, su matrimonio y su familia al Espíritu Santo.

Consagración al Espíritu Santo

Recibid ¡Oh Espíritu Santo!, la consagración perfecta y absoluta de todo mi ser, que os hago en este día para que os dignéis ser en adelante, en cada uno de los instantes de mi vida, en cada una de mis acciones, mi director, mi luz, mi guía, mi fuerza, y todo el amor de mi corazón.

Yo me abandono sin reservas a vuestras divinas operaciones, y quiero ser siempre dócil a vuestras santas inspiraciones.

¡Oh Santo Espíritu! Dignaos formarme con María y en María, según el modelo de vuestro amado Jesús. Gloria al Padre Creador. Gloria al Hijo Redentor. Gloria al Espíritu Santo Santificador. Amen.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful.
And kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.
And you will renew the face of the earth. 

Lord, 
by the light of the Holy Spirit 
you have taught the hearts of your faithful.
In the same Spirit 
help us to relish what is right 
and always rejoice in your consolation.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Pastoral Message

May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you, on this Sunday that we celebrate the feast of Pentecost, it is an excellent opportunity for us to consecrate ourselves to the Holy Spirit. I invite all of you to consecrate yourself, consecrate your life, your work, your marriage and your family to the Holy Spirit.
